The GOU is one of the private universities of the Nagaland state. The university is known as the Global Open University. The university was established in the year 2006 by the act of the government of the Nagaland state. The university is situated in the Dimapur district of the Nagaland state. The university was established in the year 2006. The inauguration of the university was made by the chief minister of Nagaland, honorable Shri nephew run on 5th June in the year 2007. The university is covering a large area of land in the Nagaland state.
The university is recognized by the university grant commission (UGC) and distance education council (DEC). The university is providing education facilities for both under graduation and post graduation course. Apart fro the regular classes the university is also providing education facilities for the students who can not attend regular classes. The university is providing education facilities for the distance learning courses too. The university is recognized by the distance education council (DEC).

Many different colleges and schools are affiliated with the university. Every year thousands students take admission in the university. The university conducts the exams in the semester pattern. The university conducts the exams in the June and December month every year. After the exams the university announces the result within two months on their official website www.nagaland.net.in.
